California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is facing drought conditions. This milestone arrives after challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Map Reveals An Absence of Dryness

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change was driven by multiple significant storms that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and tragic losses. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

However, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. State experts point out that it is too early to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
